Fire-damaged Winnsboro Landmark Has Chance at New Life

Winnsboro , S.C. (April 23rd, 2011) Three months ago, we showed you a historic Winnsboro building as it burned to the ground. Since then, the debate has been whether to start over or rebuild. Thespian Hall in downtown Winnsboro has been a mainstay in the community throughout its history, first as a playhouse, and more recently as the tavern restaurant.

"Winnsboro is a very historic town, and Thespian Hall is a real picturesque part of the history of Winnsboro," said Winnsboro business owner Joe Wilkes. In the shadow of Winnsboro's clock tower -- the oldest in the state -- you'll find Thespian Hall. In January, it was nearly leveled by a fire, a hard hit for a cozy town. "People in Winnsboro have very few places to go, and Thespian Hall offered real good dining and local talent playing banjos and guitars and that type of thing," said Wilkes.

A local attorney with close ties to the community hopes to buy the building and restore the Tavern.

"I've been very blessed to be a part of Fairfield County, and it's my opportunity to give back to the community to preserve a historic treasure in Fairfield County,"said Mike Kelly, whose law office is in the building attached to Thespian Hall, but was relatively undamaged by the fire. Now he's trying to rehabilitate the old building. "You can't knock it down and start over," said Kelly. "It's irreplaceable, so we must pull out all the stops to preserve that beautiful historic treasure."

Not everyone's a believer. We talked to one shop owner off camera who says he doesn't think it's salvageable. "It's gonna be a monumental task to bring it back, and I applaud the efforts of the people who are doing it, and I hope they succeed," said Wilkes.

With 275 years behind it, there are big hopes in this small town that Thespian Hall will see the light of day again. "I'm a stubborn guy, and when I set my mind to something I'm gonna do my best to pull together whatever resources we can to preserve this property," said Kelly.

Winnsboro town council this week gave Mr. Kelly another 90 days to decide whether thespian hall can be saved. We'll be sure to let you know when that happens.

Legal Representation on a Budget

I believe it was Abraham Lincoln who said “[h]e who represents himself has a fool for a client.” This is true in most cases, especially those involving complex legal issues or an attorney representing the other party. Even as an attorney, there are matters that I would not represent myself as I may not know enough about a particular area of the law to be an effective advocate for myself. Some people do not hire attorneys because they believe that they cannot afford one. Depending on the nature of the legal matter, an individual is not required to have money to obtain representation. Many attorneys accept cases on a contingency fee basis, that is, the attorney does not require money upfront from the client and collects a fee and recovers cost from any money received at the conclusion of the case.

At the Mike Kelly Law Group, LLC our cases involving personal injury, medical malpractice, consumer law, workers’ compensation, social security disability and veteran’s disability are generally accepted on a contingency fee basis. We also provide free consultations, so it costs nothing to speak with one of our attorneys regarding your legal matter. If you have a legal question outside of our practice areas, I recommend that you at least speak with an attorney to see how much or how little is required to obtain representation…read more.
