Yaz

What is Yaz?

Yaz is an oral contraceptive manufactured by Bayer Healthcare, Inc. In addition to ethinyl estradiol, Yaz is the only birth control pill in the United States that also contains drospirenone, which is a diuretic. It also is the only oral contraceptive marketed with multiple uses - birth control, as a treatment for moderate acne, and as a treatment for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Yaz may also be known as Yasmine or by its generic name, Ocella. It is currently the top-selling oral contraceptive in the U.S.

What are the dangers associated with Yaz?

Studies indicate Yaz poses a particular health hazard because one of its two primary ingredients, drospirenone, is a diuretic. Studies show that long-term use of diuretics may cause an increase in potassium levels in the blood, which can lead to hyperkalemia. This condition causes heart rhythm disturbances that can cause blood clots, which may lead to sudden cardiac arrest, pulmonary embolisms or strokes, and death. Longterm use of diuretics also may cause serious gallbladder problems and even lead to gallbladder removal, even in women who exhibit none of the traditional risk factors for the disease.

In 2008 and 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued warning letters to Bayer, citing the company for misleading television and web site advertisements. The FDA said the ads misleadingly broadened the drug's indications, overstated the products efficacy, and minimized serious risks associated with use of the drug.
